FAQ: STEPS Program

Frequently Asked Questions: 2nd Chance Indiana STEPS Program

1.  What is the 2nd Chance Indiana STEPS Program?

The 2nd Chance Indiana STEPS Program is an eight-week virtual Skills, Training, Employment, and Preparation Services (STEPS) program designed to connect justice-impacted individuals with education, training, and employment opportunities. The program operates on a continuous loop enrollment model, allowing new participants to enter the program at any time and begin working toward their employment and career goals.

2.  What topics are covered in the STEPS Program?

Participants will receive instruction and guidance on career assessments, resume development, job search strategies, training program exploration, communication with employers, use of the 2nd Chance Indiana Jobs Available Directory, conflict resolution, workplace professionalism, financial literacy, self-care, and other employment-related skills and resources.

3.  Who is eligible to participate in the STEPS Program?

To participate, an individual must be currently justice-impacted or have a history of justice involvement. Participants must also be willing and able to commit to completing the full eight-week program.

4.  Is an onboarding session required?

Yes. All accepted participants are required to attend an onboarding session before beginning the program. Onboarding sessions are conducted in person at designated locations, a list of which will be provided upon acceptance into the program. The onboarding process typically lasts approximately 2 to 3 hours and includes an overview of the STEPS Program, review of expectations, completion and signature of required documentation, information about accessing virtual classes, and an opportunity to ask questions.

5.  Is there a cost to participate in the STEPS Program?

No. The STEPS Program is offered at no cost to eligible participants.

6.  How are classes delivered?

All classes are delivered virtually, allowing participants to attend from a location with internet access using a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

7.  Do I have to start at the beginning of the eight-week program?

No. The STEPS Program operates as a continuous loop, meaning participants may enter the program at various points throughout the eight-week cycle. Over time, participants will complete all required topics and program components.

8.  What technology do I need to participate?

Participants will need access to a smartphone, tablet, or computer with internet access to attend virtual sessions. If you do not have reliable internet access or a device available at home, you may be able to use resources at your local public library or another community location that provides free internet and computer access. Participants who need assistance accessing technology should speak with their Job Counselor immediately after onboarding to discuss available options and resources in preparation for their first session.

9.  What is expected of participants?

Participants are expected to attend and actively participate in sessions, complete assigned activities, communicate with staff regarding attendance issues, maintain respectful behavior, and work toward employment, education, or training goals.

10. What should I do if I need to miss a virtual session?

If a participant expects to miss a virtual session, they should notify the Job Counselor as soon as possible. Participants will still be required to review the course materials and watch the recorded session to stay current with program content.

11. Can I be removed from the program?

Yes. Participants who fail to attend sessions, do not communicate with staff, violate program expectations, or engage in disruptive behavior may be removed from the program at the discretion of 2nd Chance Indiana staff.

12. How long do I have to complete the program?

Because the program operates on a continuous cycle, participants should work with their Job Counselor to develop a plan for completing all required sessions and activities if absences occur.

13. Will I receive a certificate of completion?
